...it's time to bid you adieu!

Well old blog, we have had lots of fun over the last couple of years! Remember that one time we had that giveaway for your birthday... or the time we launched the 'original' website... or even the time I posted shots from 2nd shooting a wedding for the first time...look how far we've come!

However, the time has come to move on to the next chapter. I am soooo excited to announce that this will be the last and final post on this blog.

This week our family suffered a great loss. My dear sweet husband's mother passed away and while she was technically my mother-in-law she truly was so much more than that to me.

Words will NEVER be able to fully express what she meant to me. I am beyond grateful for that gentle, yet strong voice in my head that urged me everyday to schedule a quick photo session for her and her children. Tami, I simply adore you for what you have given to us.

Please, let this be that gentle yet strong voice in your head... don't delay in getting your own family photos done! These stolen moments we were able to have captured will be with our family for generations.

You know the saying, 'too many chiefs, not enough indians'? Well, for those who know this family (seen HERE and HERE) know that they already have too many indians and not enough chiefs. I love these little guys and have loved watching them grow up so quickly, in addition to their twin sisters.

In order to mark the spectacular occasion of their 3rd birthday we set out to get some great, fun photos with the amazing tee-pee their Nana made for them... gotta love Nana's!! As you can see we really only had one who was willing to wear his feather headband, but hey in this family one is better than none!

On the road again...

That's right, you heard it here folks! I'm taking the show (and family) on the road! This August we're hittin' the great wide open heading up to NorCal (bay area & central valley/Stockton area)... the birthplace of yours truly. Lots of destinations on the itinerary, but with only one goal in mind... NOTHING!!

So, naturally I thought while I'm there (and it ain't that often, unfortunately) if anyone wants to hook up for a photo session I can definitely make time for my peeps! I'm going to have an awesome travel session package that can't be beat! So call or e-mail me for all the details. Be sure to spread the word if you have any family/friends in NorCal, too.

Ahhhh, I can already hear the beaches calling my name...

One of the biggest lessons I learned from this weekends webinar class with Mr. Arias was not to just practice, but to really put into motion some of the techniques he was teaching with regards to lighting setups. He even half joked that if you don't have a subject to shoot then take your vacuum cleaner to the top of some hill and shoot the heck out of it until lighting, shadows and everything makes sense. Well, fortunately for me I have at least one willing participant and my vacuum cleaner is spared any humiliating photos of it floating out there on the internet. ;-)

And by willing participant, I mean this one was all the way, 100%... see below...

I really wanted to get a better feel for that softbox; the photos above are from that small softbox...and who better to shoot then my tiny B.

Now with these photos I switched off the softbox and replaced it for my shoot thru umbrella... just lovely!

Thank goodness I have at least one I can call upon and is absolutely in love with getting her picture taken and wants to help her mama! One guess as to which one it is...

That's kind of how I feel about my camera lately. I've been so busy in other areas of my business and life that sometimes my camera looks more like a home decor piece sitting on my bookshelf.

A few months ago I picked up this nifty little softbox for my external flash to experiment more with OCF (off camera flash). I haven't had the opportunity to play with it too much, but after being so inspired by a webinar class I'm taking this weekend with the lighting guru himself I just had to get out and test a few ideas and lessons I've been learning.

Unfortunately, as you can see I had no control over wardrobe or hair... that's what I get when I'm spontaniously inspired after bedtime.

And so this begins my love affair with light... and not the natural kind... anyone wanna come out and play??!!

Oh blog, how I've missed you! You've been so good to me; always being there when I need you and never asking for anything in return. I've neglected you and for that I will give myself a much needed time-out! Wake me in a few hours... ;-)

For reals though, I've been extremely busy these last few weeks with shooting, editing, creating, brainstorming, oh and being a mom. My sweet family deserves the biggest gold medal for staying strong and letting me go off and do my thing when I need to... love you guys!

OK, so I wanted to pop in and updated ya'll on my summer schedule. Basically I am taking the month of June OFF... well, we'll see if I stick with it. I have a few personal shoots & projects that I'll be doing, but for the most part I'll be working and preparing for the re-launch in July. I will have limited openings in July & August and then, believe it or not September will kick off the beginning of the fall holiday photo craziness...ooooo, I can't wait!!!

Meet this very lucky family! The mama entered my contest to receive a free session over at the Full House blog and she WON! As soon as I checked out their family blog I was even more excited for this shoot. I am still floored by the overwhelming positive responses I received from that contest - a girl likes to hear nice things every once in awhile - and I really do wish I could offer everyone a free session.

I love it when my clients basically give me free reign with their shoot. No expectations. Just fun. Those are the best and most relaxed, as you can see from these AMAZING shots I got of this gorgeous family. You guys hang in there...the starving student life doesn't last forever...I'm living proof!

What do you say to someone who emails you a week ago and says she wants to drive to you, from San Diego, for a family/newborn/kids photo session? You pretty much say 'you complete me!' And then you freak out!

Seriously though... this woman is top notch in my book. She and her hubby are both marines, however he is currently deployed to Afghanistan and is due home very soon. She, on the other hand, is running the house with their two kiddos and one just happens to be a 4 week old baby girl who's daddy is going to melt when he meets her. I have so much appreciation for her taking care of it all (not to mention giving birth without her man) ... I flip out when my hubs has to work 2 days in a row... I'm such a wimp!

Anywhoooo, so here is the fantastic trio! I'm beyond words at how flattered I am that she drove here to have ME photograph her sweet bunch! We first started off with the newborn session; her little angel was so good and peaceful and pretty much let me do whatever I wanted. Then we moved on to the session of the handsome big bro rockin' his dapper tux and barefeet - gotta love that! Then, we finished up the day trying to squeeze out of the kiddos every last ounce of patience they had to do ONE more shoot as a family. See, I told you it was a photography marathon! I'm exhausted just recapping it all.

OK, well it's not actually MY birthday, but to this little ole bligity-blog...

I was just looking through my blog archive and realized that this month is the blog's 2nd birthday... I've been posting here for 2 years - although not too consistently, I know.

It all started with this post HERE. I distinctly remember coming home from that shoot with Jamie and loading the photos onto my computer and thinking... 'hot damn I'm good!' ;-) Seriously though, it was a major turning point for me personally in building my confidence and technical skills.

So, now the question becomes... how do we celebrate this monumental occasion? Cake and ice cream? Streamers and balloons? Oh, I know... how about a giveaway??!! I've never hosted a giveaway here let's just give it a shot!

You may have remembered I won a snazzy little headband from a very talented gal a little while back and I literally want to wear it every single day - and I'm sure it was actually made to fit the head of one of my darling daughters... oh, well - it's absolutely the softest and sweetest headband EVER! While this was only my second time 2nd shooting I'm quickly finding a real love and appreciation for it; it sure is nice to just be the relaxed, calm one who has to get all the fun, detail shots... that I can handle.

This couple was so sweet and the bride was such a crack up. She had this laugh that was so completely infectious that I couldn't stop smiling all night long. And as you can see the grounds at the Farm at South Mountain were absolutely gorgeous... loved it!

Teeny tiny baby goodness | Mesa Newborn Photography

Seriously, I want one! I just about stuck this little nugget in my pocket to take home, but then I remembered... I LOVE MY SLEEP! There is actually quite a hilarious story about this little baby and my disorientated state of sleepiness... just ask!

You can literally count on 2 fingers the number of newborn shoots I've done so you can imagine when this mama had her baby I was ready to pounce... practically camping out in front of her house waiting to 'work my photo magic' on this little peanut. The mama did all the right things to make sure we had a perfectly smooth shoot. Baby bathed, check. Tummy fed and full, check. Eyes super sleepy, check. All the makings of a great newborn shoot.

I told the mama it would be a couple of days before I could get the sneak peek up on the blog, but seriously... look at this picture... I could not go another second without posting this delish pic!

Last weekend I had the GREAT opportunity to 2nd shoot for Mr. Andy Andrews himself. He is an amazing wedding photog and I was beyond flattered when I was asked. Really?? Me?? WOW!! [insert grin from ear to ear HERE] Andy is the real deal... he knows how to 'get the shot' and he is an amazing teacher with loads of patience.

I'm madly editing about 1/2 dozen shoots right now so I can only give you a quick glimpse of one of the shots I got at the wedding. I promise more in the next day or two. Pinky swear!

OK, so I'm barely alive these days. I had a little impromptu shoot I did with a friend that turned out completely amazing and oh so beautiful, but I'm keeping it top secret for now. I have some wedding - yes, I just said the 'W' word - photos to post from my time as a 2nd shooter this weekend. And I have a newborn session this week that will hopefully grace this blog ASAP. Not to mention the client orders and meetings and the overdue lunch with my pal RY FOTO. Phewwww, I'm exhausted just listing all the goodies on my plate.

But on a different, yet very vague subject... some BIG things are shaping up for this little business of mine. I can't escape the fact that everyday - literally, everyday - for that last 5+ months I've had this itch for change. Oh how I wish I could be as spontaneous in business as I am in life, but I'm not. Therefore all my moves and ideas and adjustments are extremely calculated and thought through, which really just translates to months and months of internal planning and soul searching. I have this overwhelming feeling of needing to make sure all my ducks are in a row first and that I'm 100% confident in what I'm doing before I commit to anything. See, I told you I was going to be vague; I have either completely lost you or you're completely intrigued... YIKES! Just stay tuned - this is going to be one FANTASTIC summer!

So this is Aimee... and she is so completely awesome and totally rocked this graduation photo shoot! Ms Aimee found me by way of this little contest giveaway I did a couple of weeks ago, and while she did not win (boo-hoo) she decided to contact me anyway to book her very own shoot. She is marking a gigantic milestone in her life and I'm sure her hubby and family are quite proud of her.

You're looking at the newest ASU grad in Landscape Architecture... and let me tell you, her degree has nothing to do with mowing your lawns or trimming your trees... just ask her ;-) I loved hearing all about the projects she had to complete and all the hard work that has gone into earning this degree... she absolutely deserves it all!

Senior portraits sneaky peeky | Danielle

So if you been following this blog for any length of time then this face will definitely look familiar. This is my gorgeous niece who has been on this blog more times than I care to dig up, but most recently HERE and HERE when I took her SENIOR model pictures late last year. With every SENIOR model that signs up we do TWO amazing shoots together. The first one is usually towards the end of your junior year or over the summer before your senior year and the other one is just before you graduate so you get some fantastic, fresh images for your grad announcements, etc.

I'm sooooo thrilled that Dani trusts me implicitly and will let me 'do my thang'! I can't tell you how important it is to have fun with your photos and to trust your photographer - ME!

Besides the behind the scene shots the mama of this SENIOR MODEL took of me, I thought I would let you in on a few of my must-haves during ANY photo shoot...

[Number ONE] Hair pulled back. My hair is finally getting long enough for pony-tails and wonky bun type hair dos.

[Number TWO] Converse. I love me some Chuck Taylors... they are soooo stinkin' comfortable and I'm diggin' the fact that I can get them in pretty much any color like my other ones here.

[Number THREE] Extra long shirts. There's nothing worse than a little crack hanging out during a photo shoot and I'm crazy obsessed about that... Crack is Whack... Just say NO!

Oldies but goodies...

I was digging through my archive because I needed to send my bro and his wifey-poo some old pics of them and their young family - mind you these little ditties were taken back in '07 before I really KNEW that I wanted to be a photog. Back then it was just me and my camera.

This little guy is now getting ready to celebrate his 3rd birthday in a couple of weeks and he now has the sweetest and cutest little brother that joined their family 5mo ago - I can't wait to see them this summer... fingers crossed!

Don't let these first pictures fool you... this kid is a natural in front of the camera - he has an expression for everything. I know I say this a lot - but of my all time, all timers... the first photo on the left is hands down the best. Don't you think? Mostly because he is my cute little nephew, but also because that expression is killer! Totally hilarious! It needs to be the cover of some hallmark card with a caption 'You talkin' to me!'

This is at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts - such a beautiful place to explore and have a quick family photo session. Oh how I miss my NorCal!

Love you guys and miss you a ton! The count down is on for our Griswald family road-trip to Cali!

A worthy cause...

Meet the P family... such a wonderful, delightful and completely adorable family. Lucky for me they were the winning bid at a silent auction for a Florence Crittenton charity event in which I donated a family photo session. I was completely smitten with them from the second dad and daughter came to greet me as I mistakenly started knocking on the door to the WRONG house ;-)

Sweet little S was just the cutest and has a princess collection that would put my girls to shame. I'm so very grateful to have met this family and for their contribution to such an amazing organization.

I know Mama is anxiously awaiting these... so, please ENJOY!

Photo 101:MECHANICS class {part deux}

I getting ready to announce my 2nd photo 101 class so I wanted ya'll prepped and ready... if you're not on the mailing list yet - get on it TODAY.

My pre-registration announcement will go out to those on the mailing list first within the next week.

Also, I had quite a few people tell me they couldn't attend the last class for whatever reason but really, really, reallllllllly wanted to. So, I'm actually gonna give you readers a voice... tell me which day of the week you would prefer. Now, my last class was on a Tuesday so I'm not going to repeat that day and my Monday's are reserved for my family so, for now I'm leaning towards either a Thursday or Friday night. Leave a comment or message me separtely letting me know the day that works for you and I'll see what I can do.

After this next 101:MECHANICS class I will not be hosting another one for quite some time; I'm going to start focusing on building up the materials and content for my photo 102:CREATIVE class. So, if you want in then be sure to sign up ASAP when registration opens.

As a reminder, photo 101:MECHANICS will consist of reviewing gear, settings, terminology, lighting, composition, and most importantly just how to take better pictures (of your kids, pets, anything). If you now have one of those super fancy cameras and for some reason it's been stuck on Auto since you pulled it out of the box - or if you've attempted some of the other settings without the results you've wanted - then you should absolutely sign up for this class.

And don't let the name fool you, we will NOT be opening up our cameras to view the inner workings of the mechanisms, we will however learn the fundamentals of photography as well as different shooting styles, understanding lighting conditions and controlling the photography triangle (ummm yeah, you gotta take the class to find out what that is :-) Plus, of course what all those buttons, knobs, wheels and dials are for.

Maternity never looked so good!

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I absolutely LOVED being pregnant! Since my babies were such little stinkers and demanded extra attention and help getting here (thanks, docs!) I just soaked up all the goodness and wonderment of being pregnant - mostly because it was it's own little miracle and because I knew it was such a beautiful thing.

Shooting this session brought all those wonderful feelings flooding back. I am so grateful at the opportunity to photograph women at this extraordinary stage in their lives. This is my dear friend Heidi and I am so glad she trusted me through this entire session. She is gorgeous, glowing, stunning and completely lucky to be welcoming her third girl into their sweet little family.

Oh yeah, and just for the record this photo above is now topping my all time favorites list. The beauty of this image is that it is 98% au natural... meaning no crazy photoshopping done here! That light, the setting, all done in camera. Except for a slight adjustment to the contrast... what you see is what you get.

Take a gander at the sweetest little headband I won from a recent Blue Lily giveaway. You might remember the Blue Lily herself, Ms. Wendy, took our own family photos last fall.

But, just for a moment let's critique the "self-portrait", shall we.

REALLY? Why can't I have arms that just extend about another foot longer - no one deserves to see my mug THAT close up. I can now see that my eyebrows need some serious attention and YIKES, my hair! It's in dire need of a serious dye job. I actually started cracking myself up at just the thought of someone watching me trying to model for my own camera... pretty lame-o.

Any whooooo, thank you dear, sweet Wendy! I simply think the world of you - your kindness, generosity and impeccable style... pure awesomeness!

So the other day my family and I took a fun little drive and ended up at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. If you're a local and have never been, well then it's a must... an absolute MUST SEE! A dear friend of mine visited a little while ago and exclaimed how beautiful it was right now so I'm glad we were able to go.

I just loved all of the wonderful nooks and crannies this park had to offer; the large trees and lush desert gardens being in full bloom. My wheels are already turning about possible future photo shoots...hmmmmmm ;-)

Model Test Shoot :: SIM Agency

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to work with one of the 'new faces' of SIM Modeling Agency. Meet Miss Tori W! Gorgeous, fun, sweet and completely adorable! I also enlisted the help of make up artist Lakesha B for this shoot as well.

I was quite a bit nervous regarding the location I scouted - when we booked this session weeks ago the sun was setting a lot earlier in the day than it is right now. Well, simple fix... we just pushed the shoot time back by 2 hours and it actually ended up being absolutely perfect. And as you can see I was even able to bring out my lighting set up and got a few OFC shots. Note to self - buy a flashlight... shooting in pitch black presents a whole new set of issues... ;-)

HS Senior Model + Drag Queens = Downtown Fun!

I had so much fun exploring and walking around downtown Phoenix with my model and her mama yesterday for our shoot. We started off at Heritage Square (what a fun place with fantastic lighting!) and just continued on around the streets of PHX. I love that area so if anyone ever wants a downtown, fun shoot just let me know - I'm totally up for it!

Meet Miss Harley C... this girl is all sorts of cuteness and has got a good head on her shoulders; she is light years ahead of where I was when I was her age (all thanks to her amazing Mama!)

And while we were downtown it was kind of hard to miss the many, many folks both male and female dressed in some sort of wedding attire. I can safely say it almost felt like I was back home in NorCal (San Francisco) watching the very entertaining drag queens - good times! I don't think we ever really found out what the occasion or event was, but whatever it was, it sure made us laugh and we just couldn't leave until we documented just a piece of it...

I have been in the flu bubble for a couple of days now and somewhere in my sickly world completely forgot to publicly say a big THANK YOU to all the fine folks that joined me for my first ever basic photo 101 class this week. I'm still floating on cloud 9 from all the excitement and love from that class... good times!

I had a bit of inspiration when reviewing the class and even while teaching the class. I think from this point forward my beginners class will be known as photo 101:MECHANICS and my next installment of class series will be known as photo 102:CREATIVE. The beginners basic class is all about the MECHANICS of your camera - the bells, the whistles, the 'thing-a-ma-jig' buttons and the 102:CREATIVE is where we will learn and put into practice some CREATIVE shooting techniques. If you are interested in signing up for a 102:CREATIVE class I ask that you either take my 101:MECHANICS class first or be familiar enough with your camera to comfortably shoot in either Av (Aperture Priority) or Tv (Shutter Priority) mode. In 102:CREATIVE there will be some instructional class as well as doing some live shooting; dates/times have not been set yet so stay tuned to the blog or Facebook for the details.

And now, for the latest installment of:

1) Being sick SUCKS! Not that this is any sort of REAL news to anyone, but seriously I almost never get sick so when I do it's real bad. Me and Nyquil have just hit a new level of our relationship.

2) Ever heard of WPPI? Well, if you're a photog and you haven't then it's quite possible you really do live under a rock, however what you do need to know is that WPPI is kind of the yearly mecca for wedding and portrait photographers from around the world. Now, I have never attended, but from all the fantastic blog entires and updates I'm seeing I'm thinking it is now my #1 goal for 2011. Anyone up for a trip to Vegas next March?

3) Redesign. Refashion. It's on my mind 24/7... wait and see.

And, since we all need something visually stimulating after all that verbiage... this is from a recent shoot I had with a couple of beautiful HS girls. Remember I'm still looking for a few HS Senior models who want a free shoot and some other goodies!

Things I've stumbled upon {v1}

Every once in awhile I'll come across some interesting and fun sites and naturally I must share these little nuggets with you, my peeps... ENJOY!

First off, this has got to be the coolest night-time, time-lapse video I've seen. It was created by Tom from Timescapes.org. Keep in mind that each 10 seconds of a time lapse movie typically requires starting with hundreds of photographs. One day I want to try this.... hmmmm, maybe during our yearly camping trip in the summer?

For all you digital scrapbookers out there... ever wonder what would be the right color combination to use when scrapbooking a photo? Or, have a picture of a room you want to recreate for your own but would like to know what colors to use? Try this site on for size... PICTACULOUS. You upload a photo and it "spits out" the appropriate color palette. Pretty cool!

And to appeal to the typography/design freak inside me a friend lead me to the site of Jessica Hische and her work is nothing short of AMAZING! So, I'm passing on the goodness to you... along with a site containing 65 popular and PROFESSIONAL free fonts. Now, I'm a font magnet... love 'em all, got 'em all. But I really gravitate to the tried and true, time-tested strong fonts; great typography is so important to me in the design process.

I have lots more goodies to show you, but I'll leave you with 3, really 4, for now.

Ten Guilty Pleasures

OK, so I'm sitting here, madly scrambling all my ideas and thoughts into cohesive sentences for my photo notes handout for next weeks class. When my mind started to deviate from the task at hand and inevitably found its way to trying to telepathically transport one of my all-time guilty pleasures into my hand. Which then got me thinking, what are some of my guilty pleasures.

Here they are... in no particular order (well, other than #1)...

1) Coke-cola. Ahhhh, feel the burn! It's what wakes me in the morning and puts me to sleep at night. It's also the reason for these lovely 10 extra pounds that seem to have settle in my, well, dairy-aire and other non-flattering body parts. Boo!

2) Paper. I love all kinds of fun paper, stationary, cards, linen, texture, cover, text. I love the hunt for just the right paper and the feel and impact it has on what ever you're creating. My other dream in life would be to have or run a fun, boutique paper store.

3) Kids clothes. I'm a sucker for anything little. This is probably why I insist on throwing away or donating my kids' old clothes the second they out grow them - it just gives me an excuse to go and buy more.

4) Nielson's Frozen Custard. This is actually a funny story. When I first moved to AZ over 11 years ago I had never, ever heard of frozen custard. In Cali we had ice cream, and sometimes gelato, but no frozen custard. So, when the hubs and I started dating and subsequently married he kept trying to take me to some frozen custard place. I would get so mad and tell him how gross that would be - I mean custard, that's frozen? Now mind you my Mom is the greatest baker and cook EVER! So my frame of reference for custard was eggs, milk and sugar beaten together... ummm yeah, now imagine that frozen. Gross, right? It wasn't till he took me kicking and screaming and force feeding me some of his concrete creation that it is now one of my all time favorite desserts. Yum!

5) Long drives. I do love a good road trip now and then, but my favorite is just a long drive with no real destination in sight. Picking new roads to drive on; finding new little nooks and crannies in different cities.

6) Chipotle's chicken burrito bowl. I'll eat that thing 7-days a week, 365 days a year. Hands down, my favorite meal.

7) Shoes. Seriously, what girl isn't complete without her ode to the Imelda Marcos shoe collection.

8) My mom. I can't go a day without talking to her at least once, most likely more. In the uncomfortable times when we've had a disagreement and we go our separate ways for a couple of days to cool of, it is the most painful time for me. The woman is my best friend.

9) Discounts. Really, any money saving sales, discounts, freebies just makes me a happy person. For example, today I spoke with our auto insurance guy because of a billing snafu on their part and in talking with him he suggested we look at this other insurance division of theirs to see if it will lower our monthly bill and sure enough it did, but $150 a month. Say whaaaaaat! I'm kind of floating on cloud nine right now.

10) My kids' giggles. OK, maybe this list should have been ranked because of course this would be my numero uno. When the 3 of them get along and all is well and they laugh with their little giggles that are so infectious it just makes me one happy mama. And you know what they say... if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy... ;-)

It seems as of late my only willing and non-bribable household guinea pig would be the hubs... what a trooper! I'm loving all that is OCF (off camera flash) if you couldn't tell, but I'm not sure if I've got the mad skills to bust out my lighting on a client shoot just yet... but I'm working towards that goal.

So, just before the typhoon hit here this evening (OK, moderate evening downpour) we headed up to the Superstition Mountains to catch a beautiful view of the storm roll in. The clouds, the mountain, the sunset... it was all breathtaking.

Before & After :: vintage fun

When I took this picture I immediately fell in love with it. Now, remember art is subjective... I realize a photo of a sweet bride's chest may not always be your cup of tea, however it was a moment I was capturing. The necklace she made, her stunning dress, the beautiful bouquet... it was all workin' for me!

I kept my post process very light and simple. For these type of photos I almost always run the ProRetouch - pure awesomeness - and a quick dodge/burn. However, to get that warm vintage feel I set the mood with just a few actions, but kept their opacity pretty low as to not take away from the overall image. That is the key.

Remember this post... I am a fan of actions and I know that may rustle some photog purists feathers, however WHEN PROPERLY USED actions are a great way to speed up your workflow. So, my disclaimer will always be... please don't abuse actions to try to fix an already bad photo or worse, layer actions on actions on actions so that the mood, vibe, moment of the whole image is then lost.

Don't get too excited...

I repeat... I AM NOT A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER. I was, however hired to be a 2nd shooter for the first time ever at a wedding a few weeks ago and I had an absolute blast. As you can see my job was uber easy with this beautiful bride and groom and I must say that I even considered for about 3.5 seconds taking on a wedding of my own one day. But then I realized the only part of wedding photography that I absolutely adore is this... the gorgeous portraits that I get to capture of the stunning couple! It's all that other "stuff" that I can totally do without.

This bottom right image has got to be another one of my all-time favorites. The necklace the bride is wearing is one she made herself (make sure to ask me about that funny story ;-) and I just couldn't help myself to try something a little more vintage-inspired with the post process.

So, to the obscene number of requests that have been coming in to do wedding photography... I thank you from the bottom of my heart for even asking me. To me, that is sincerely the biggest compliment I could possibly get. I guess for now I'm more interested in taking some killer, insanely stunning bride/groom portraits so if that's something you want to hire me for... please call me!!

Making family photos easy, fun and dare I say ENJOYABLE!

I really want to share with you some tips and tricks on what I think helps to have lots of fun during family photos... and no, it's not impossible!

The most common and popular type of family photography emerging right now is the candid lifestyle and I love it. It's a pure and raw sense of who you are as a family, a wife, husband, mother, father, son, daughter, etc. As I usually explain to my clients it's a true representation of who YOU are right now at this very time in your life. However, whether you like the candid lifestyle or the statement poses and setup shots (which I equally love) I want to help you achieve the same end result... a fun and happy family portrait that leaves you with warm memories of your session. So, in order to achieve some of those great family moments Moms and Dads listen up, here are some secrets!

First off, bribery, oh sweet bribery! I'm sorry, but it truly is a beautiful thing. Kids (and husbands, too ;-) need to know that all their hard work will get some kind of reward. I usually come prepared with a goodie/treat to give them, but what they really want is to know from YOU that they did great... and you do that by paying them off!! Seriously! You know what works and what will get their attention so use it. Exploit it.

Next, it's really, really important that I can connect with your kids so they feel free to have fun and to be playful - not stiff and unsure about what's going on. I will act just as silly as they do and in the end I really just want them to have fun. So rather then tell them all the things they can't or shouldn't do, tell them what they can do. They can play games, they can run and jump and climb on Dad's back (if it's OK with Dad), they can explore and make funny animal sounds. Anything that will keep the laughter flowing.

Now believe me I know, I hate the word relax, too. It's hard to have someone pointing a big black camera at your face and to be told to relax, but it's necessary. If you let your kids play and have fun then that allows me to be able to capture some beautiful moments of your family. So, be relaxed and donʼt always be so concerned that not everyone is looking directly into the camera – it is more about the moment you are having together and creating those lasting memories.

Try to keep the day and/or time leading up to your session as calm and stress free as possible. Having a 7 year old and 3 1/2 year twins myself I know that a task like that can seem virtually impossible, but your kids will feed off of your stress and anxiety. Come into your session pumped and excited! I promise you that your all clothes will look great, I will get THAT shot you want and your family will be the cutest I've ever seen!

And finally, at the end of the day it's all about the connection. Let your kids have the freedom to be kids; this is the time to engage and interact with them. Husbands and wives this is the time to show your kids how much you love each other and remind yourselves what family is all about.

Sooooo Cool...

First off, I'm gonna have to say showers! Not baby showers, not bridal showers, but regular 'ol rub-a-dub-dub showers. Much of my list today (and well, every idea that I usually have) comes from the time I get to myself in a nice, hot shower. Now, I know what some might say... 'Really, a shower, you pick that as your sooooo cool item'? Yes, yes I did. As a mom of 3.5 year old twins showers can be a scarce thing... sorry big guy!

Next, I'm going with doughnuts! Krispy Kreme to be exact. Last week for my daughter's 7th birthday she wanted me to bring in doughnuts for her class - which I did. When she came home that day she had a backpack full of birthday cards that the kids in her class made for her. One of the cards was from a new little girl in her class and the card read 'I love your donus'. Oh how I love first graders!

Not Cool...
NBC! You should know that I'm a big fan of Conan and I despise all that is Jay Leno - never liked him, never will. He has the worst jokes and an even more horrible delivery. Really, what NBC needs to do is just tank Leno all together... none of this giving him PART of his old time slot back - that's the biggest joke of all. Conan... I will follow you where ever you go!

And just because I'm reminded of it every time I look at my phone, I'm going with that stinkin' iPhone touchscreen glass. I mean really?? 199 bucks to replace?? C'mon...

This is a shot of my kids watching as Grandma and Grandpa pull away from our neighborhood... it brings a tear to my eye each time I look at it... we miss them so much already.

I'm sorry, but I do get a bit sentimental towards my electronic equipment - especially when each one is so darn expensive and only through blood, sweat and tears do I get to purchase said electronic goodies. So you can imagine the horrid meltdown I had when this happened...

Let me tell you that it doesn't take much for this to happen, so word to the wise all you iPhone wielding folks out there... protect your baby!! I immediately drove to the Apple store and begged and pleaded for them to make my sweet angel all shiny and pretty and new again. I was so heartbroken when a porkly fellow behind the 'so-called' Genius Bar told me that my warranty which would have covered the $199 repair had just barely expired! Booo-Whoooo!!! He then proceeded to joke around and inquire as to how much distance I actually got with the phone... the nerve... like THIS would be self-inflicted??!! I was about to show him how much distance I could get with my foot when I realized that small children (mainly my own) were looking on.

The silver lining is that the phone and touchscreen DO still work and all that beautifully cracked glass was kept to the top of the phone... where my EAR goes! So if I cry while I'm talking to you on the phone you'll know that my ear is being cut up by tiny shards of iPhone glass. I'm such a cheap sucker!

I've never been one for goals, BUT...

...I have come to realize their significance in my life as a mom, a wife and a small business owner. They are necessary! Being the 'fly by the seat of my pants' kinda girl that I am and my go with the flow nature it can be hard to sit down and define my path - to tell myself where I'm going. And I often feel that if I REALLY set a goal and I fall short of that goal then I have failed - no matter the journey, no matter the lessons learned... just a failure. However, I do know that the feeling you get from accomplishment, from reaching that goal, from seeing things come together is tangible... it's a REAL thing!

So, while I may not like the word 'goal' I will share with you just some of the things I will be working to accomplish in 2010.

This is going to be a grand New Year... I can feel it!

Lost city...

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing a dear, sweet friend and her family in a new location HERE - a hidden treasure for any photographer. After having only just a few minutes to explore and photograph the family before we lost all possible light, I knew a 2nd trip back was mandatory... too much to see and take in for just one visit.

On the 2nd trip back - which is only 35-40 min from my home - I got to see so much more. This really is a sort of 'lost city'. Abandoned and forgotten yet incredibly rich in our state's history.

I'm always struck by the amazing talent that runs through people. I love to be creative, to make things - whether with my own two hands or by way of a camera - but I can honestly say that I don't have nearly a fraction of a fraction (figure that one out you math wizards) of talent as this lovely lady... She is the brains and guts behind all of the amazing hair accessories and such that I have personally sported and photographed HERE and HERE.

So to help this lovely lady get a few more detailed shots for her newly unveiled etsy shop found HERE, we staged a very quick accessory shoot. Love the shots we got!

I suppose since we're related I'll let this one slide, but next year I'm putting you on my calendar months ahead of the holidays... 'Lil Miss Procrastinator'!

But seriously, this year is about to close and I'm grateful to be able to end it on a high note with such an awesome family... love you guys to death. I'm sure glad our long drive paid off...

So this wraps up photography sessions for the year... yes, I said YEAR! I am dying for a little break... my kids have gotten to know the back of my head very well - that would be what they see of me as I'm sitting at my desk for hours on end these last few months. I will be ever so grateful for some much needed mommy time with my kiddos, oh and I guess the hubs, too. The other day I saw a home decor wall sign that read 'If the house is clean is must mean the computer is broken.' Ummmm, yeah, I'm gonna need a sign like that... Kelli (aka Miss Lolly Jane), can you get on that... ;-)

But for reals, thank you everyone for all of your wonderful support and comments and good times this year; I hope 2010 brings many more fantastic moments together. And just so you know, I still have some fun projects and lots more photography to post while I'm taking my 'business' hiatus, so don't stray too far... come back and visit soon!

The holidays are practically here and I'm madly editing lots of photos, holiday cards (including my own and they are kind of FaNtAsTiC!) and trying to create a festive Christmas home... the latter I'm failing miserably at. This week has been both grueling and so emotional that even eluding to the experiences I've had over the last 5 days would bring out the ugly cry in me... let's just say that I hug my babies a little tighter, long for the days when the hub is home a little more and I'm so very grateful for ALL the gifts I have been blessed with.

And seriously, one of those beautiful gifts is Maggie and her darling boys. I am in awe of the work she does both in and out of her home. She is raising some wonderful, young men!

They say admitting your addiction is the first step to recovery. Well, I don't know if one can fully recover from a sun flare addiction, or what type of 12-step program is out there, but I must say that a little sun beaming into a photo is pure heaven to me. So naturally when a client - or in this case a dear, sweet friend and fellow photog, Jodi D - wants a location with an open field and some of that beautiful tall grass then I just have to believe that they secretly want me to exploit that sun and use it up as much as possible. ;-)

Love you guys. Your family is beautiful. I'm glad we made this little arrangement happen.

I have to admit, I'm slightly taken back by the OVERWHELMING response to my little survey question regarding a beginner's level photography & Photoshop class. I am so excited at the responses I'm getting that my head is literally spinning - like exorcism spinning - with plans and ideas and all sorts of good stuff for the classes. Things are in the works so definitely stay tuned and keep those responses coming... forward the survey link to friends, neighbors, anyone you think might be interested.

Through the survey I have received a few questions so I thought I'd use this blog to answer and update y'all...

Q: Would the classes be in-person or online?
A: Definitely in-person. I'm a hands on person and can work so much better if I'm with you and you can see me make weird hand gestures and point at things that I can't remember the name of or any other visually necessary classroom traits. It just makes more sense.

Q: How many people will you teach in a class?
A: I'm thinking for my first class go-round I'm gonna limit it to no more than 10 people, maybe even less. This really needs to be a hands-on and open Q&A forum so I want to be sure each person has time to ask questions, can understand the concept and can move on to the next. Any more than 10 and I'm sure this "teacher" might have an anxiety attack.

Q: Where are you located?
A: I personally am in Mesa (Arizona), but I'm not quite sure where the class will be held yet - definitely somewhere in the East Valley - Gilbert, Mesa or even Queen Creek. Could be in my home or maybe a rented facility type room?? All up in the air but that's what I'm working on.

Q: When and how do I sign up?
A: Awesome... you're ready to go... yay! The class most certainly will not happen this year... phew, I know... you're welcome! Let's get the holidays outta the way - heck you may even find a nice, shiny new camera from Santa and now you know just where to go to get hooked up with a lesson, or two. I'm thinking mid to late February at the soonest. In the next few weeks I will open up a mailing list/pre-registration list for anyone who is seriously interested. Stay tuned and be sure to get on the list for advance registration - remember 10 people or less per class.

Q: Will you let us know the cost before we sign up?
A: Heck ya! I'm no used-car sales guy... no offense... ;-) At this point it's looking to be about $50 per person for a 2-hour class. However, this may change between now and registration - but once I make the official announcement that will be the final cost; no changes, no hidden fees.

Now, let me remind you what this class is NOT. For photography: this is not a workshop, meaning an all day, live shoot with models and lecture and all that good stuff. If that's what you're looking for let me know and I'll point you in the direction of some good workshops. This also is not a class for those who feel like turning pro... right now. This is a class, however for those looking to capture better pictures, to get your camera off the Auto mode and into the Creative modes. If going pro is something you desire down, way down the road that's great. This will get you knowing your camera, it's functions and most of the technical mumbo-jumbo you'll need. For Photoshop: this can be a hands on class if you own a laptop or just an in-depth how-to class with lots of note taking and Q&A. I am self taught so most of what I will be teaching are things I have learned from trial and error.

So that wraps up the questions I have so far. If you think of anything else please do not hesitate to e-mail me directly.

By no means do I consider myself a newborn photographer - I leave that one to the real pros. However, I had the honor, nay the privilege of spending some time with one of my very best friends and her brand new son. To be able to photograph this baby and to have witness their union has truly been such a blessed event in my life. I love this sweet family with all my heart and I am so grateful for the gift they have been given.

Taking care of business...

Don't know if you've noticed this yet, but at the top header I've added a link titled 'Interested in taking a class'? I've been giving this a ton of thought lately and after some "gentle" persuasion by persistent friends I thought I would at least put this out to the great world wide web. So, if you click on the link above it will take you to a quick poll/survey I'm conducting to see if there is much interest out there.

The Beginner's Photography Class would consist of reviewing gear, settings, terminology, lighting, composition, and most importantly just how to take better pictures (of your kids, pets, anything).

With the Beginner's Photoshop Class I can offer 2 types of focuses; Class A would consist of using Photoshop for photo editing and we would learn the basics to editing including layer masks, adjustments and enhancing. Class B would focus on using Photoshop as your design software for making invitations, announcements and digital scrapbooking - we would cover topics such as brushes, creating and using elements, masking and layer styles

In either class scenario experience is NOT necessary, nor is a high-end camera or the latest/greatest version of Photoshop. However, I must warn you now... I am not a trained teacher! I will probably get off topic, I will probably make up words on the fly and I most likely will learn something new from you before the day is over. Guaranteed. So go HERE and let me know if you're interested.

I am beyond grateful to have been part of this wonderful family - if only for 2 short hours. Not only was this a big occasion because it was family picture day, but it was also a reunion as some of this extended family had just arrived into town for the holiday.

How big was your Thanksgiving...

... because this was just half, yes HALF, of the place settings for our family. Directly behind me - the picture taker - was another long table just for all the kids.

For some bizarre reason I seem to be the one "chosen" each year to make the name tag place settings for our Thanksgiving dinner. Not exactly sure why this has become the tradition - I mean we're all family and we usually can find a place to sit, but it is what it is. I usually gripe and moan and complain about this little project but I secretly love it... alright, there it is, cat's outta the bag!

So this was the place setting I came up with for this year... simple balsa wood rectangles spray painted with chalkboard paint and tied to an apple stem. Clever. Simple. Waaaaaay cute. Yes, yes and yes!

There is an abundance to be thankful for this year and I am truly grateful for where I am at today! I have a tremendous family, a husband who I simply adore, a deep love and appreciation for all the little things in my life and a hobby that has become a full-fledge passion which in turn has blessed me with a small business of my own. So, to all my dear sweet clients... THANK YOU! I have enjoyed meeting and photographing each and everyone of you. I love that you let me into your lives; I love that we laugh, giggle and occasionally snort together; I have loved all the moments we've shared together.

And that was it; it honestly was that down n' dirty quick. Before I knew it I had arrived at the most glorious location, soaked up every last bit of light from the day and got some of the most amazing shots.

OK, before the rumors start I do intend to marry my one and only sweetheart - Scott - again someday. Only when I do, we will of course be already married with a brood of our own so maybe it's more of a renewing of vows or something along those lines... what ever we do end up doing it will be followed by one spectacular party.

Ever since we were married some 10+ years ago I have been plotting and thinking and dreaming and wishing for the day when I would get to do it all over again, but only this time it will be the way WE want, where WE want and only surrounded by the most awesome best friends and family EVER. Now of course this is not happening anytime soon - I'm actually thinking closer to our 20 year - 'cause hey, I'm gonna need some time to plan this monumental occasion and to do it right.

Now it's known that I am not a wedding photographer but I can sure appreciate the real art of wedding photography and the true professionals that do it. So, I'll let you know right here and now that if one, Mrs. J* is still in the biz 10 years from now that it will be her that I stalk, oh I mean hire to be my photog. I lurve her...

Notice Mrs. J* is an Orange County, CA photog... why would I hire and OC photog, you ask? Because I'm totally getting {re}married on the beach. May sound cliche, but for this true, native California girl it reflects me and it's probably the one place in this world that our family would rather be at any given time, in any given season. I miss the beach!

So for now, I've got the place, I've got the photographer, hmmmm what else am I missing...?? Honestly, nothing because I would do this all tomorrow with just those two things if I knew all my friends and family could make it. However, since I know that alone will take 10 years to work out I might as well coordinate some other details that were completely overlooked the first time around.

So, when I do start all the fun planning I'm lov-ing these inspirational style boards... using pantone colors as a guide is pure genius and it speaks to my soul! This is what I'm loving... today...

I love before and afters...

I just love it when photographers are bold enough to show their before and after shots; it can be a scary sort of thing to show people your straight out of camera (sooc) images, but it has help me immensely so I thought I do the same.

But, to start I do want to preface this show 'n' tell post with a few comments regarding post processing. If you are a photographer or even just an avid photoshop user then you are familiar enough with actions. That word - actions - for some reason has become this dirty, taboo word in the world of photography. I say... GET OVER IT! Actions are great; use them. It's NOT cheating if you know how to properly use actions to suit your own personal style and vision for the image(s).

Here's my argument... Sure, knowing how to accurately adjust and correct an image in Photoshop doing each step, one-by-one by yourself is great and all photographers should have that sort of knowledge as a resource. However, if an action can complete all those tedious steps for you and does exactly what you want it to do for an image and it gets you from point A to point B at just the click of a button then why wouldn't that be a good thing?! It just seems natural to me to utilize actions as a way to speed up your workflow - it's all about time management and efficiency for me.

Just remember there are always two sides to each coin and by that I mean there is no action in this world that will make up for a bad picture due to lack of camera know how, creative composition or photoshop knowledge. In my humble opinion it all starts with a good, correct exposure and proper white balance; just like in construction if you start with a solid foundation then what you build on top of it will stand strong.

Without further a do, here's a little glimpse into my post processing photo work...

For this photo as soon as Tanya laid on the blanket I knew exactly what my vision was for this photo. So much of creating your own style and knowing what to do with an image comes from having a vision of what you want it to look like... which, believe me only comes from experience, creativity and shooting who ever and what ever as much as possible. In the photo above you can see that the SOOC isn't bad at all, but what I really wanted to create was a dreamy, ethereal image with a bit of a vintage feel. I just love the way it turned out.

I was thinking this morning about BFF's and how I love to surround myself with them. It's no lie (and you can confirm this with my hubby) that EVERY thing in my life is my favorite... I have about 25 pairs of my favorite shoes, every song I hear on the radio is my favorite, every thing I eat is my favorite, so it's no surprise that I consider all my friends my favorites. Literally.

So then I wondered, who would be my celebrity BFF. Maybe it was because of the time of day, maybe because I could hear her voice in the other room as I prepared for my lunch date with my newest BFF, but I think if I had to pick my true celebrity besty it would be one, Ms. Kelly Ripa. Some love her, some hate her (namely my mother) but I finding her completely hilarious with my kind of humor and wit. Mu-wha Ms. Ripa... I know we could totally be friends!
